Technical GEO Engineer

Earns Sophyx Certified Technical GEO Engineer – Professional

A 12-lesson course for developers and technical SEOs: engineer a site that AI systems can fetch, read, trust and act on, and keep it that way. Verified bot access and bot policy as code; facts served in the first HTML response for fetchers that do not run JavaScript; an entity graph in structured data; passage-shaped semantic HTML; honest discovery files; pages and APIs that agents can use, including MCP; fast, cacheable responses; verified bot logs with alerts; referral plumbing that keeps the AI source visible; and a GEO CI pipeline with governance. Builds on The Answer Engineer (AE-200). Worked example: Gearwick Bikes, a fictional online bike shop whose storefront is a JavaScript single-page app; its rival Tarnway Cycles is fictional too.

What you will be able to do

4 modules, one skill each

Module 1

Let AI In

The three jobs AI bots do and how to verify a bot before you trust it; bot policy as code (robots.txt by job, control tokens, CDN rules, proposals labelled); what a fetcher without JavaScript actually receives.

  • Sort AI bots by job
  • Write a bot decision table by job
  • Test what a fetcher receives

Module 2

Machine-Readable by Design

Structured data as an entity graph with stable @ids; HTML written as quotable passages; discovery files and feeds judged by what they earn.

  • Model your brand as entities with stable @ids
  • Structure a page as one-answer sections
  • Publish a sitemap with honest lastmod

Module 3

Ready for Agents

Pages agents can operate; one source of truth exposed as an API and an MCP server; fast, cacheable responses that never shrink the crawl.

  • Run an agent walkthrough of a key task
  • Describe your facts as an API
  • Measure and cut time to first byte for bot requests

Module 4

Observe and Operate

A verified bot log pipeline with alerts; referral plumbing that keeps the AI source attached; GEO checks in CI with owners and a change log.

  • Build a parse, classify, verify pipeline for bot logs
  • Trace an AI referral from the answer link to the landing page
  • Add GEO checks to the deploy pipeline

Syllabus

Every lesson

Lessons run 2 to 3 minutes. Each has captions, a transcript, key terms, a practice quiz and a short exercise for your own business.

How you earn it

Practice, then prove it

Practice quizzes

Four questions after each lesson. Try as often as you like: every wrong answer explains why it is wrong. One attempt finishes the lesson.

Final exam

40 questions about situations at different businesses, 60 minutes, pass at 75%. Everyone gets their own mix of questions. 24 hours between attempts, up to 3 in 30 days.

Final project: the technical GEO build

Pick a site (your own, a client with permission, or the fictional Gearwick Bikes data pack) and deliver the four parts below, one per module: (1) an access policy pack: a one-week verified bot inventory, a robots.txt and CDN rule set as code with its decision table, and a raw-HTML audit of the 10 key pages; (2) a machine-readable layer: an entity graph in JSON-LD, five pages restructured as passages, and the discovery set (sitemap with honest lastmod, IndexNow or a feed, llms.txt labelled as a proposal); (3) an agent-ready set: an agent walkthrough with fixes, an API or MCP description of the brand's facts with auth and rate limits, and a performance and caching plan with measured TTFB and 304 behaviour; (4) an operations set: a verified bot log dashboard with two alerts, a referral plumbing test with fixes, and a GEO CI pipeline definition with checks, owners and a change log. Each criterion is scored 0–3 against the descriptors; pass needs every criterion at 2 or more. Two graders score 10% of submissions.

Prerequisite: Certified Answer Engineer (AE-200), or equivalent knowledge of how AI search works, plus comfort with HTTP, HTML and a terminal. All brands in examples are fictional; all numbers are illustrative. Platform specifics (bot names, rendering behaviour, protocol support, app directories) are stated as of October 2026 and may change; proposals are labelled as proposals.
